They did this to themselves. They dropped the ball from 2001 - 2009 when they would just report press releases created and made up by the white house. People stopped reading/paying attention to the MSM and started searching out real news reports. The MSM still think there are WMD's in Iraq and that gwb made the right decision to invade Iraq.

@Tru Invincible: It's not all sad. There are enough people getting a nice salary at the top 1000 companies, who spent 4 years getting that marketing/advertising graphic design/management degree.

It's the beauty of self-preservation. If they don't buy advertising somewhere they are going to actually have to do physical labor as a job.

If only 10% of their readership has to accept the paywall for them to survive, those motherfuckers need to stop playing around and get their money under control. The only people you hear saying we need to give in to the pay wall or we will lose journalism forever are the writers that are being laid off and replaced with these blog-writing cats that I keep hearing about.

Ad revenue is going to continue to decline as audiences fragment and businesses continue to gain more direct channels to their customers.

This is marginally counterbalanced by it becoming easier to target readers more accurately.

If the supply of opinion and ranting continues to increase, it'll eventually become worthless. Anyone can manufacture opinions, but it takes effort to conduct original reporting.

Fucked-up strategy has driven online ads for as long as the internet has been around. Companies expect them to act like affiliate links without paying affiliate rates. They're really just display ads that should have a similar purpose to those in print.

That's where Gawker has done well - by treating online ads like display ads instead of direct-response.

The Times and other publications will just have to develop a new product that will appeal to that 15% that wants to pay. The rest can be ignored.

The trouble is that the Times can't radically reconstruct their operation due to contractual obligations. So they go through this Kabuki of pretending that they're powerless to avoid upsetting their corporate structure.

Malaria, no? but I fell down hard at work & because, at the end of my shift @ 11pm, I didn't drive down to the 24hour contracted care center by the airport (real nice neighborhood) & instead waited until the morning to go into one in a safer neighborhood, I got written up and lost a day's pay ($86).
