London Underground, District Line, January 2007, about 22:30:00. Returning from a disastrous stand-up comedy gig in East Ham ( the audience was an oil painting - tumbleweeds - crickets - maybe it was my accent? - and then the promoter stiffed me on the fee) I began to feel nauseous. I soon realised I was going to vomit. "Don't throw up on the train!"I thought. I held on for a couple of stops and then, when the doors opened for thirty seconds ("mind the gap!") I stepped out on to the platform, puked all over it, and stepped back on to the train. I did this every stop from then on. By the time I got to my transfer station, the other passengers were all sitting in the farthest part of the carriage from me, like that Seinfeld episode with the naked guy reading the paper. I got out at the transfer station (still only halfway home) and stumbled into a dark corner and puked out the rest of it behind a dispensing machine. Someone came up and used the machine while I was puking. When I finally finished, wiped my brow and got my senses back, I saw that it was a chocolate machine.

I have never traveled east of that point on the globe, but I know someday before I die, I must. I call this vow, "breaking the Curse of East Ham."

I've already had my "star meltdown" of '09, thank you very much. Thanks to someone who will remain nameless, who I'm guessing disappeared into the internet ether one day like a poltergeist in a room full of toy clowns. Urg. I'd rather not go there again. Things were said. People died. Armbands were worn (there were planes, black stars, and contraband clip art). The war stole a piece of our souls, it did. So I'm going to have to dust off my pithy, my witty, and my snark-laden derision yet again, like some well-worn teacher made to make lesson plans at the start of a new school year? Feck! All that stuff is in my new IKEA shelving unit which you know is short for Swedish-terrorist, so the chances of me finding it are slim to none. Can't we just see who can gyrate spastically in an ill-fitting unitard and bounce off a big red ball the hardest?

Richard, thank you so much for your bold move in directing our attention to a 21st century scourge. The Crackberry. Although most won't admit it, but it bothers them too. I don't see the valor in thinking everything one says has to be "positive" and upbeat. How stupid. Everyone likes to be paid attention to, and listened to when they are speaking. This is a very big problem society is facing, a few (except you and Gwyneth) are willing to speak about it in public. This cennectedness is a bigger issue than most would admit. The electronics manufacturer's have profited handsomely and society at large has suffered. Another case of business and profit over civility. No luddite here, but I value human contact as the bottom line of LIFE. Period. Also, I hear you are leaving Gawker. Sorry to see you go. Good luck, and please let your new whereabouts be known.
