Still More Globes Cancellation Fallout: Spielberg Won't Be Getting his DeMille Award Until Next Year

Even though Steven Spielberg's disembodied head is still floating over the countdown timer relentlessly ticking off the minutes until Sunday night's One-Hour Golden Globes Press Conference Spectacular on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's website (really, between the counter and Spielberg's sad little noggin, is there a more depressing corner on the internet right now?), the HFPA has announced that it's sparing the directing deity the indignity of receiving his Cecil B. DeMille award via FedEx by postponing the honor until their 2009 ceremony.

While there are certainly those who'll see this latest development as yet another depressing reminder that no one is immune to the effects of the ongoing labor unrest, we prefer to see it as an encouraging sign that the Globes organizers have inside information that the strike might possibly come to an end before next January.

Golden Globes Not Killed, Just Scaled Back To Within An Inch Of Its Awards Show Life (At Least For Now)

According to The Envelope, NBC and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association are about to announce their desperation-inspired plans to salvage something broadcast-worthy from the strike-induced wreckage of the Golden Globes ceremony, hoping that the Writers Guild, motivated by pity, might agree not to picket the unrecognizable telecast-abomination stitched together from mismatching news special, clip show, and party-coverage parts:

At 7pm NBC will air Dateline with clips and interviews with nominees. (Currently scheduled to air for two hours on Saturday night.)

At 8pm, NBC is in talks with Dick Clark Enterprises for a one-hour retrospective/clip show.
At 9pm there will be a press conference covered by NBC News announcing the Golden Globe winners. (9pm-10pm)

At 10pm NBC will broadcast an "Access Hollywood" style, Golden Globes party show... visiting the various parties in Hollywood.

Developing! Stay tuned for a WGA announcement declaring that the union remains unmoved by this attempt to get something on the air next Sunday night and still plans to picket, forcing the NBC/HFPA team to come up with an even stranger plan for a Globes special, possibly involving a combination of a network news anchor reading a press release of the winners' names and a court sketch artist's hasty illustrations of stars accepting their statuettes.

UPDATE: The Globes ceremony has now been officially canceled.
