He was 36.

Initial reports hint at a drug overdose; anonymous sources tell both the New York Post and TMZ that drug paraphernalia was found next to Goldstein's body in his Lafayette Street apartment.

On September 19, 2008, Goldstein and former Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker were critically injured in a Learjet crash in South Carolina. Four other people, including the pilot, copilot and two passengers, died in the incident. Second- and third-degree burns to Goldstein's hands and head required three surgeries. In the weeks after the incident, Goldstein told People magazine he was coping with the trauma one day at a time.

A decade or so earlier, Goldstein had attempted suicide amid a struggle with drug addiction before entering recovery and maintaining a sober life for close to 10 years. He also struggled with obesity from a young age and eventually had gastric bypass surgery.

Press accounts have referenced DJ AM's Twitter stream, where the last entry, dated Tuesday, is a reference to a Grandmaster Flash song, reading, "New York, New York. Big city of dreams, but everything in New York ain't always what it seems."

Goldstein had an on-again, off-again relationship with singer Mandy Moore and was once engaged to reality TV star Nicole Richie.

<![CDATA[Travis Barker Not a Fan of Hospital Life, Ex-Wife Shanna Moakler]]> Though DJ AM was recently welcomed back to Hollywood with a bash fit for our putative next president, his friend Travis Barker remains in the hospital, still recovering from burns sustained from the plane crash that took the lives of their friends. Barker just took to Myspace to update his fans, extending both kudos to the hospital staff and a middle finger to hospital life in general. Also deserving of Barker's burned digit? The ex-wife who's begun to incur his ire, Shanna Moakler.

Though press reports said Moakler flew to be with Barker when he was still in a Georgia burn unit, Barker complained (in a missive that was later edited out of his Myspace blog entry) that she hadn't been to visit him since he was moved to an LA hospital earlier this month. Now, the never press-shy Moakler is brushing off those comments and claiming that she was almost on that fateful flight:

"I was supposed to go with [Travis] to South Carolina, and at the last minute, I had this gnarly feeling and said, 'I don't think we should fly together anymore,' " she told [Us] in its October 17 issue, which hits stands Friday. "God forbid something ever happened ... our kids wouldn't have both parents. Instead of flying a commercial flight back home, they decided to take a private jet. He e-mailed me pictures of the plane and wrote, 'It's really small and scary.' I had a bad feeling, but didn't want to sound strange, so I said, 'Be safe.' "

...At the end of the interview, Moakler briefly addresses Barker's comment in a recent MySpace blog that he hasn't seen her since "the week [he] checked in," saying that she was "deeply hurt" by the comment, but that the couple share "a love that will always be there."

"Trav and I are so crazy. We are off for one week, on the next," she said.

Yes, indeed, what an acute case of amour fou that keeps you from visiting someone you love in the hospital! We'll be sure to try that next time we forget a birthday or miss an appointment: "Sorry, hon: I was too busy giving quotes to Us Weekly to provide important moral support. You know how it is. Our love is so crazy!"

<![CDATA[DJ AM Completes Recovery Cycle With First Concert, Interview]]> DJ AM joined Jay-Z last night for the rapper's performance at the Palladium, handily shattering the world-record recovery time for returning to the stage after nearly burning to death in a plane crash. The concert came one night after the AM's (a/k/a Adam Goldstein) conquering-hero welcome at the Avalon, and mere hours after People nabbed his first interview since the Sept. 19 accident that claimed four lives and also critically burned his friend and flight partner Travis Barker:

After his pal, former blink-182 drummer Barker, flung open the emergency exit door, Goldstein recalls, "I tried to cover my face as I jumped through a fireball. As soon as I hit the ground, I remembered, 'Stop, drop and roll.' So I started rolling."

Recovering from the final of three surgeries Goldstein, 35, has undergone procedures to treat his second- and third-degree burns. He says he's coping one day at a time.

More like one gig at a time; he's set to resume his residency at Pure in Vegas next Tuesday, and at this rate we'd almost feel disappointed if he didn't have a complete comeback tour booked by the end of the week. Good luck with that.

<![CDATA[DJ AM Welcomed Home in Uncannily Obamaesque Fashion]]> Everyone was thrilled, no doubt, to see DJ AM walk out of the hospital last week so soon after the plane crash that critically burned him and travel partner Travis Barker while killing four others. LA's especially excited DJ community has since organized a "welcome home" bash to be held Oct. 14 at the Avalon, but might have slightly overshot its appreciation with its accompanying posters featuring AM in flame-orange, Obama-influenced repose. Did we miss the memo saying tacky is the new tribute? Let us know after viewing the full ad following the jump. [ONTD]

<![CDATA[DJ AM Makes First Public Appearance Since Plane Crash at Memorial Service]]> Released from the hospital this past Friday, DJ AM yesterday made his first public appearance since the plane crash that claimed the lives of four people and left the musician and his friend Travis Barker badly burned. One of those victims was Chris "Lil' Chris" Baker, Barker's assistant, and it was his memorial service that drew DJ AM back into the public eye.

DJ AM, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, arrived in a limousine to pay respects to Baker, 29. More than 300 people turned out to honor Baker, and many friends stood up to share their memories of him at the memorial service, which lasted two hours.

...Goldstein, dressed in a green polo shirt, followed Villar's request that people wear green – Baker's favorite color – to honor her husband's memory.

Goldstein, who suffered burns in the crash, was released from Doctors Hospital in Augusta, Ga., last Friday. Barker, was released from the hospital Monday and is on his way back to Los Angeles on a bus.

"Travis felt so bad to have missed [the service]," said a source.

Can't blame Travis for eschewing air travel on his way back to Los Angeles. Good luck to both men.

<![CDATA[Recoveries: After that horrible plane crash...]]> Recoveries: After that horrible plane crash last week, it seems the sole survivors DJ AM and Travis Barker are doing a little better. AM has been released from the hospital in Georgia and is on his way back to LA. His publicist says, “While he is deeply saddened by the events, he is thankful for all of the love and support he has been receiving from fans and friends world wide. We ask that you continue to respect his privacy as he rests and heals and mourns the loss of his friends.” Meanwhile Jermaine Dupri just visited Travis in the hospital and told People Magazine all about it. “He's doing good, he's gonna be alright. He's just got a lot of healing to do,” says the producer. What’s more, Travis is getting his hospital room all tricked out with iPods and computers so he can be more comfortable. “He's supposed to send a message out to everybody in a couple of days to let everybody know that he's feeling better.” Glad to hear it. <![CDATA[Following Plane Crash, Travis Barker and DJ AM Expected to Recover]]> After the Friday morning jet crash that killed four people and left musicians Travis Barker and DJ AM badly burned and hospitalized, some good news: though both men are still in critical condition, the medical director of the Georgia burn center where they are being treated says they are expected to make full recoveries.

Barker has burns on his torso and lower body and Goldstein has burns on his arm and part of his head, Mullins said. (Mullins would not say the percentage of their bodies that were burned or whether they were conscious. He also did not go into detail about the type of treatment they are currently receiving.)

According to People, a blown tire is being blamed for the accident:

"The cockpit voice recorder went on for two hours, but the last 18 minutes were most pertinent, because those words proved that it was a tire blowout that [may have] caused the crash killing four people," Debbie Hersman, board member of the National Transportation Safety Board in Washington, D.C., tells PEOPLE.

"After getting their clearance from Air Traffic Control, the plane only got 80 knots on the 8,600-foot runway before the incident," she said.

...The crew tried to abort takeoff, the recording stated, and there were many background and impact sounds on the tape. The voice tapes from the control tower were equally revealing.

"The Air Traffic Control tapes stated that they gave the crew clearance to depart, as well as the wind speeds," said Hersman, who is in Columbia with 11 other investigators from the NTSB.

"The tapes went on to say they saw sparks and heard the crew on the plane explaining that they were going off of the runway," she said.

One of the victims was Chris Baker, Barker's assistant, though initial rumors that said the jet was chartered so that he could fly back to his pregnant wife's bedside have been proven false. Barker's ex-wife, Shanna Moakler, and AM's ex-girlfriend, Mandy Moore, have flown to the men's bedsides.

We'll keep you updated, but hopefully, things will only get better from here.

<![CDATA[Travis Barker And DJ AM In Critical Condition Following Plane Crash]]> Tragedy struck in South Carolina last night, as drummer Travis Barker and DJ AM, aka Adam Goldstein, were critically injured in a Learjet crash that took the lives of four others. From the LAT report:

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the plane carrying six people was departing shortly before midnight Friday when air traffic controllers reporting seeing sparks. The plane headed for Van Nuys, Calif., went off a runway, through a fence and crashed on a nearby road, officials said.

South Carolina officials say four California residents died in the crash.

The Lexington County coroner said today that pilot Sarah Lemmon of Anaheim Hills and co-pilot James Bland of Carlsbad died. Also killed were passengers Chris Baker, 29, of Studio City, and Charles Still, 25, of Los Angeles.

They were headed back to L.A. after performing at a free concert in Columbia. TMZ is reporting they saved their own lives by jumping out of the wreckage; both are expected to survive, but have sustained serious burns. This is really awful. Two weeks ago, we were standing a few feet away from them at the VMAs rehearsal and remarking upon what a surprisingly tight show they put on, backing a wide array of vocalists. Developing...
