What else after all, distinguishes a Saw 5 from a Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant?

Since losing their brand, life hasn't been right for the Brothers Weinstein. Could a name change though really bring back that magical English Patient era?

• Their company may be ailing, but Weinsteins are ready to make a play to get their name back. The Wrap reports that Harvey and Bob are preparing a pitch to Robert Iger to buy back their old Miramax brand now that Disney has all but shuttered the division. When they left Disney, The Wrap reports, Michael Eisner refused out of spite to let them take the name — which is a hybrid of the Weinsteins' parent's names - with them. But with Disney now under less vengeance driven management the Weinsteins hope is that the time be be ripe for an historic reunion . [The Wrap]

George Clooney is reportedly "circling the lead" role in the long awaited new film by Sideways and Election director Alexander Payne, a family drama/comedy entitled The Descendents. [Variety]

• Suggesting that Oscar's new producers may be taking a step away from from the Hugh Jackman mold, Nikki Finke reports that the hosting job has been offered to and turned down by both Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. Which means there is only one Tropic Thunder star left to host...Jack Black, your day of destiny has arrived. [Deadline]

• Hollywood is saved! In earnings season, Viacom reported "better-than-expected third-quarter profit gains thanks to improved theatrical film and TV advertising trends, as well as cost controls." Marvel however, ruined the party by reporting lower profits in Q3, as they had no theatrical releases last quarter. Thanks for nothing Marvel. [Hollywood Reporter]

• Sony Classics has picked up the US rights to Mother and Child a drama about three women and their children, which received gushing reviews when it debuted at the Toronto Film Festival in September. [Variety]

• Diversity is at last coming to late night TV. Fifteen years after Arsenio Hall went off the air, the next few weeks will see the debuts of talk shows built around George Lopez (TBS), Wanda Sykes (Fox) and Mo'Nique (BET). [The Wrap]

• The Atrios are in! The casting society of America handed out their annual awards at a banquet last night, giving top honors to Star Trek, Mad Men, Up and Milk. Kath and Kim's John Michael Higgins hosted the fete. [Hollywood Reporter]

• Most brilliantly understated headline of the morning: "Paranormal Activity sequel a possibility. Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman reveals Tuesday." Yes, well there is always that chance that Viacom has decided they've made enough money this decade. [Hollywood Reporter]

• The unsinkable Jim Belushi juggernaut rolls on. The According to Jim vet has signed up with Diane English and Barry Levinson to create a courtroom TV drama based on famed defense attorney Mickey Sherman. [Variety]

<![CDATA[Everyone You Used to Love Comes Back for Pilot Season]]> It's that magical time when many actors clamor for parts that will probably never see the light of day. Scott Wolf, Alyssa Milano, that lady from Sabrina the Teenage Witch. But first, movie casting:

Genius director Alexander Payne is going a bit Charlie Kaufman-esque with a film called Downsizing, about a man (Paul Giamatti) who decides to shrink himself to preserve his health. Reese Witherspoon meets cute with him along the way, and Sascha Baron Cohen plays a strange, tiny foreigner. Sounds twee. And wee! [Variety]

Keira Knightley will be starring in a movie version of Kazuo Ishiguro's sci-fi chamber piece Never Let Me Go—a scary and ponderous book—to be directed by Mark Romanek, who did scary and ponderous before, to middling effect, with One Hour Photo. Knightley, in my estimation, is actually pretty decent casting. [EW]

Arrested Development smirker Jason Bateman has just signed on to the Jason Reitman comedy Up in the Air (based on snark-defender Walter Kirn's novel), about a man (George Clooney) who is obsessed with frequent flier miles. Sounds zany!!!!! [Variety]

Young Loren Dean, who had some coulda-been-big opportunities in the 90's movies like Mumford and Gattaca, never quite made it. Ah well. He'll be starring alongside the inexplicably-made-it Hillary Swank in her exoneration pic Betty Anne Waters, currently filming in Ann Arbor. Pack a sweater, Loren. [THR]

Stars of old and relatively new will be joining the basically useless Entourage next season. Jami Gertz, who commingled with your Jason Patric vampire sex fantasies in The Lost Boys (or maybe your Bill Paxton/tornado fantasies in Twister), will play the wife of Gary Cole's sadsack agent character. And the delightful Autumn Reeser from The OC will play a junior agent at Miller/Gold. Good news for them, bad news for us that there's to be another season of all that limp bro blustering. [THR]

Ah even more sorta-forgotten actors getting brief glimmers of hope only to have most of it dashed. Still, good for you Julie Bowen, Scott Wolf, Jonathan Silverman, and Sabrina's Aunt Zelda (and Kate's mom from Lost), Beth Broderick. You'll all be heroes for at least a week. [THR]

Following in that vein, Kim Raver (Lipstick Jungle) and Alyssa Milano (Gold Rush: A Real Life Alaskan Adventure) have also landed pilot roles. Raver in Shonda Rhimes' already-annoying TV news drama Inside the Box, Milano in an "Untitled Ricky Blitt comedy" about a telemarketer. [THR]

<![CDATA[Alexander Payne, HBO Chase the 'Large-Penised' Demo With New Series]]> In a continuing creative victory for horse-geezered men around the world, HBO has brought Alexander Payne on board as the director of its new series Hung. Picked up by the network less than a month ago, the dark comedy is about "a well-endowed man ... who was once a high school sports legend, but is now plodding along in middle age as a struggling father and high school basketball coach. His luck begins to change, however, when he figures out a way to use his best asset." Or, as we hear creators Colette Burson and Dmitry Lipkin pitched it, "Kind of like Sideways, but with a huge dick where the pinot noir goes."

Clearly that's all Payne — himself long entrenched among Hollywood's generously beschlonged elite — had to know before signing on to his first TV directing gig. The pilot is in the works as we speak, with casting announcements soon to follow; we expect no less than Payne alum Thomas Haden Church to sign on as the lead, while Zak Efron, breaking through in his first real young adult role, will play the troubled son coming to terms with his own one-eyed, pavement-scraping inheritance.

<![CDATA[Are Alexander Payne And Misanthropic Fashionista Blogger Alice Kim A Pairing?]]> Former In Style Accessories Director and lead 'View From The Fourth Row' blogger suspect Alice Kim is leaving In Style for Omaha, Nebraska, in a development that probably involves internationally-acclaimed "spiritual healer" Dawn Christie and may also concern native Nebraskan and Korean-proclivitor Alexander Payne. (Yeah, that Alexander Payne! Guess we're all going to the wrong cocktail parties, huh?) If true, this sheds light on her mysterious decision, announced last month, to move to Nebraska to open a boutique targeting the white-hot Omaha fashionista population. Apparently the store is still happening, with some financial help from her parents — and also, so it happens, her co-workers! Late last week, an informer tells us, Alice held a little "cubicle sale" of all the free swag she raked in during her years "covering" the luxury leather goods industry. So here's an ethical question: how much of a markup do you charge the employees who suspect you of relentlessly anonymously trashing them on your bitchy fashion blog as you depart for a charmed new life with a Hollywood golden child?

Answer: A lot!

According to a source at In Style, the first item Alice sold was a Burberry bag for which she asked — and received! — $900. Why didn't she sell it on eBay like all the other editors? When's she going to come out about her blog? Will Payne's ex-wife Sandra Oh play Alice in View From The Fourth Row, the critically-fellated indie film chock-full of self-absorbed, merlot-hating fashion world misanthropes? Developing!

<![CDATA[Hollywood PrivacyWatch Special Edition: Adam Sandler And Kevin James Do Boystown]]> Alexander Payne's follow-up* to Sideways, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, is the Backdraft-meets-Boat Trip story of two firefighters who pretend to be a gay couple in order to receive domestic partner benefit. The fake firemen lovers in question are none other Adam Sandler and Kevin James, who, according to a Defamer operative, are either taking their field research very seriously, or just bouncy-shlong crazy and could care less who knows it:

Whilst enjoying some cocktails out on the patio of Mickey's in the 'Ho with my faggle, we saw Adam 'Click' Sandler sashaying down Santa Monica with some friends, including bear poster boy, Kevin James (insert King of Queens joke here). Much to our surprise, Sandler and James, along with their posse, sauntered into the club. They stayed on the other side of the room, near the nicely endowed go-go boy. One of my faggle did a little Nancy Drew-ing and found out from one of the go go boys that this wasn't the first time Happy Gilmore was seen at this particular establishment.

Indeed, this kind of dedication to the faking-gay-for-laughs craft is to be commended on the part of both actors, who clearly are going the extra mile in order to win brownie points with director Payne. Still, Sandler could probably have skipped paying homage by reenacting one of Sideways' most famous scenes, startling Mickey's' patrons by drunkenly screaming at his co-star that he is "NOT drinking any fucking 2-for-1 Green Appletinis!!!"

*UPDATE: Payne only penned the Chuck and Larry screenplay; Benchwarmers director Dennis Dugan will be directing. We apologize for our insufficient IMDb-surfing research skills.
