In the proud columnist-to-sitcom tradition of Dave's World and CBS's current Listen Up comes Joint Custody, the 20th Century Fox pilot for ABC revolving around much-traveled (read: frequently fired) LAT entertainment columnist Joel Stein's heady, post-college days. Do you, the struggling thespian looking to make a name for himself in Hollywood, have the acting chops and VH1-ready quips about A Flock of Seagulls to properly embody the Stein mystique on the small screen? From a Joint Custody casting notice:
[JOEL STEIN] 22, a self-conscious wise-ass with a Clintonian need to be liked, Joel Stein has just graduated college at Stanford and has come home to New Jersey to start a job as Assistant TV Critic at Time Out New York Magazine.
Very please to be poised on the brink of adulthood, Joel views this as "my time" and figures the things that held him back as a kid—being a nerdy, awkward looking kid with glasses—are now finally working for him (he's a smart, quirkily handsome guy with slightly smaller glasses). Prepared to stay at his parents' house until he can afford a Manhattan apartment, Joel is stunned to learn that his parents separated six months ago and he's part of a joint custody settlement along with his younger brother and sister: one week with Mom, one week with Dad. Angry at being left out of the family loop till now, Joel's got a good perspective on things and does his best to help out when things get too crazy. SERIES REGULAR
"Quirkily handsome," if you weren't aware, is casting code for "the executive producer on which this character is based will be sitting in on all casting meetings, so we're going to bring in a handful of good-looking actors to make him feel good about himself and help us keep our jobs."
